Installing the Cisco Unified Application Environment

This document assumes that the reader is installing one or both of the two server-side components of the Cisco Unified Application Environment on a single machine that has been prepped by following the CUAE SDK Prerequisites guide. The product names of these two components are the Cisco Unified Application Server and the Cisco Unified Media Engine.

Note: It is just as technically valid to install an application server on one system and a media engine on a different system, as long as the CUAE SDK Prerequisites guide has been followed for both machines.

The entire installation process consists of running two or three installers (depending on what components are installed) as well as a small manual modification to the Apache configuration file. The three installers are described below:

The Cisco Unified Application Designer is very straightforward to install, and the procedure for installation is not covered explicitly here. The designer can be installed co-located with the server components.

If any two or more components of the Cisco Unified Application Environment are installed on the same system, then one should be sure to synchronize the versions of all such components.

To download any of the Cisco Unified Application Environment installers, one must create an account on http://www.cisco.com and by selecting the ‘Register’ link. This free account is the only relationship with Cisco required to obtain the software.

Before running the Cisco Unified Application Environment installers, obtain console access to the machine, either directly or using virtual network computing (VNC). All installation steps must be executed via one of these two methods. Do not use Remote Desktop to install this software.

Upgrading to CUAE 2.4.3 version

To upgrade from 2.4.2, follow these steps:

  1. Download the platform services installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The platform services installer is named CUAE-platsvc-2.4.3.0008.exe.

  2. Download the application server installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The application server installer is named CUAS-2.4.3.0008.exe.

  3. Download the media engine installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The media engine installer is named CUME-2.4.3.0008.exe.

  4. Follow the instructions below to execute the three installers.

To upgrade from 2.4.1, follow these steps:

  1. Download and install WSE 3.0 Redistributable Runtime which can be found at the Microsoft Download Center.

  2. Download the platform services installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The platform services installer is named CUAE-platsvc-2.4.3.0008.exe.

  3. Download the application server installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The application server installer is named CUAS-2.4.3.0008.exe.

  4. Download the media engine installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The media engine installer is named CUME-2.4.3.0008.exe.

  5. Follow the instructions below to execute the three installers.

Upgrading to CUAE 2.4.2 version

To upgrade to 2.4.2, follow these steps:

  1. Download and install WSE 3.0 Redistributable Runtime which can be found at the Microsoft Download Center.

  2. Download the platform services installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The platform services installer is named CUAE-platsvc-2.4.2.0009.exe.

  3. Download the application server installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The application server installer is named CUAS-2.4.2.0009.exe.

  4. Download the media engine installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The media engine installer is named CUME-2.4.2.0009.exe.

  5. Follow the instructions below to execute the three installers.

Installing Platform Services

To install platform services, follow these steps:

  1. Download the platform services installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The platform services installer is named CUAE-platsvc-<version>.exe.

  2. Execute the installer.

  3. The Cisco Unified Platform Services installation Wizard appears. Click Next.

  4. The end-user license agreement appears. Read it, and if you agree with the terms, select I accept the terms in the license agreement. Click Next.

  5. A MySQL Database Server dialog appears. One must specify the credentials for a MySQL adminstrative user which has sufficient privileges to create users and databases. Click Next.

  6. A MySQL Database User dialog appears. One must specify the credentials for a MySQL user which has proper read and write permissions on the database. If this user is not the same as the user specified in step 5, then the installer will attempt to create the new user using the credentials specified in step 5. The credentials specified in this dialog will be stored in the C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\Unified Application Environment\cuae-common.config file after this installer completes. Click Next.

  7. A Ready to Install the Program dialog box appears. Click Install.

  8. The dialog window indicates progress as the installation proceeds.

  9. Once this dialog has completed, alter the Apache configuration file by adding this line to the bottom of the file: Include "C:/Program Files/Cisco Systems/Unified Application Environment/System/Apache/conf/". The Apache configuration file is by default located at C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\conf\httpd.conf. Apache must be restarted after making this change, which can be done either by using the Administrative Tools > Services control panel or by executing the following at the command prompt: net stop apache and then net start apache.

  10. Click Finish when the installation is complete.

  11. You do not have to restart the machine yet.

Installing the Cisco Unified Application Server

To install the Cisco Unified Application Server, follow these steps:

  1. Download the application server installer from the Cisco UAE Downloads page to the target system. The application server installer is named CUAS-<version>.exe.

  2. Execute the installer.

  3. The Cisco Unified Application Server installation Wizard appears. Click Next.

  4. The end-user license agreement appears. Read it, and if you agree with the terms, select I accept the terms in the license agreement. Click Next.

  5. A notice about cryptographic features appears. Read it, and if you agree to comply with the applicable laws and regulations described in the notice, then click Next.

  6. A Ready to Install the Program dialog box appears. Click Install.

  7. A dialog will indicate when the installation is complete. Click Finish.

  8. If you do not intend to install the media engine, or if you have already run its installer (and so this is the last installer), restart the system.

Installing the Cisco Unified Media Engine

Configuring and Verifying the Installation

Once the system has restarted after executing the last installer, the Cisco Unified Application Environment is considered installed. At this point, the integration between the Cisco Unified Application Environment and a test Cisco Unified Communications Manager can now be undertaken, in order to verify that the installation is functional. To perform this basic integration test, navigate to the example configuration and test applications section in the Cisco Unified Application Environment Administration Guide and go through these steps to verify basic functionality of the installation:

  1. Open the Cisco Unified Application Environment Administration Guide.

  2. Navigate to Getting Started.

  3. Navigate to Configuring an Example Environment.

  4. Follow the steps in the Configuring an Example Environment section until you complete Task 4: Install, Configure, and Test Sample Applications.

  5. If the AnswerCall and MakeCall applications work, then you have a working Cisco Unified Application Environment installation!
